Mulan’s Crowning Glory

Record breaker! This post made it to the list of Popular Posts after only a week it was published!

Mulan is the inspiring Chinese legendary heroine who had long beautiful straight black hair, typical of Chinese maidens, but she cut off her precious mane to fulfill a mission that's more than beauty.  She defied age old tradition and saved not only her father but the whole of China.

Hua Mulan Combs & Asian Arts

In the modern times, Mulan had inspired a store that sells special combs, brushes and hair ornaments-- Hua Mulan Combs & Asian Arts.

Hua Mulan's package

Hua Mulan combs are hand-made in China using 100% natural materials.  Some of their combs are made of yellow willow wood, pear wood, peach wood and sandal wood.  Some of their combs are made of goat and ox’s horn.    Other combs are a combination of wood and horn.

Hua Mulan combs when used often can minimize hair fall and breakage since they have lesser friction compared to plastic and metal combs.  They stimulate the scalp to release its natural oils making hair healthier and grow faster.

Hua Mulan combs also relieve stress and reduce headache.  The use of pure horn comb has added benefits.  According to Chinese traditional medicine, using combs that are made of pure goat or ox’s horn minimizes gray hair and can alleviate illnesses such as neurasthenia, fever, rheumatism.  Horn combs also lower blood pressure and aid detoxification.

The carvings in the comb are hand-made

Wooden and horn combs signify smooth relationships and sensitivity to others.  Thus, Hua Mulan combs are ideal gifts for people who are very dear to our hearts.  Hua Mulan combs are quite expensive but worth the cost.  Aside from the health benefits, the combs and hair ornaments have exquisite paintings and carvings that are all made by hand.  The combs have simple but elegant appearance.  In the Philippines, a Hua Mulan store is located in SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

According to the legend, Mulan cut her precious long mane to disguise herself as a male in order to become a palace warrior in place of her father.  After all her adventure, Mulan probably used a comb made of pure goat’s horn to bring back the beauty of her crowning glory.

Mulan (1998 Disney Film) — The Story as Retold Through Sword Swings

Chinese literature says that Mulan was believed to be of had the surname, HuaFa was Disney's watered down version of Hua.

Fa Mulan is not just an ordinary girl who puts her fate to an old tradition of matched marriage.  She is free-spirited, clumsy and often gets away with her mischief.

Carefree Mulan

But she wanted to please her family so she consented on being sent to a Matchmaker to prepare her find a suitable husband.

Mulan's 8 Lucky Steps to Beauty:

Step 1: Start with a good bath for glowing skin

Step 2 & 3: Brighten up your eyes and sweep your cheeks with blush

Step 4: Create pouty lips with glossy color

Step 5: Groom your hair

Step 6: Complete the look with a killer dress

Step 7:  Check if everything is well put together before you go out

Step 8: Be confident beside other girls!

Several girls were being screened.  Mulan waited until the Matchmaker called her name.

"Fa Mulan!" calls the Matchmaker

During the encounter with the Matchmaker, Mulan was not focused and goofed her way through the tests.

The Matchmaker discovered Mulan’s trickery of the oath and messing up the rituals with a cricket companion.  The Matchmaker was fuming mad and hastily told Mulan that she will never bring her family honor.

But Mulan was destined to prove the Matchmaker’s words wrong. The deadly Huns have invaded China and one man from every family was called by the Imperial Palace to serve in the war.  The Fa family had no son, so Mulan’s father insisted on joining the army despite his old age and war scars.

Mulan wanted to save her father from the perils of the war.  So she disguised herself as a male by cutting off her long sleek beautiful black hair.  She then stole her father’s sword, armor and letter of enlistment in the Imperial Army and rode her horse, Khan, to join the training of a group of palace soldiers.

Along the way, Mulan met Mushu, a small dragon who introduced himself as having been sent by Mulan’s ancestors to make her change her mind.  But Mulan was determined and posed herself as a young man named Ping to an army of soldiers.

Mulan gained interesting male friends, Yao, Ling and Chien Po, during the training and she secretly fell in love with the good looking and brave Commander Li Shang who really thought she was a man.  As Ping was clumsy, Shang was determined to make a man out of ‘him’.

It was through Mulan’s intelligence though that she was admitted as soldier in the army, she was able to solve a difficult puzzle given by Shang.   Mulan soon developed into one of the Army’s best soldiers.

Practice makes perfect soldiers

In one battle that they fought with the Huns to avenge the death of Shang’s father and his army, Mulan defeated the enemies through an avalanche she caused by firing a rocket.  She also saved Shang's life during the snow avalanche.  But she got seriously wounded and her secret was revealed.  Shang was angry at Mulan and he discharged her from his group of soldiers.  But as repayment for her heroic deed, Shang spared Mulan from death, a supposed penalty for her lie.

Oh, it's good to have a friend when everyone has left you!

Mulan discovered that Shan Yu, the leader of the Huns, and his five generals survived their previous battle and were heading towards the Imperial City.  She warned Shang and persuaded him to help his team in protecting the Emperor.  Shang declined her.

But when the Huns were able to take siege in the palace and held the Emperor as captive, Shang together with Yao, Li, and Chien Po joined Mulan in her plan to rescue the Emperor.

Shang's team joined Mulan in the Imperial City

Mulan together with Yao, Ling and Chien Po posed as concubines to trick the guards.  Shang was able to enter the Palace.   Yao, Li, and Chien Po escaped with the Emperor.  Mulan stayed behind with Shang to fight Shan Yu.  But Shan Yu knocked Shang unconscious.  Mulan was pursued by Shan Yu, high up the palace’s roof.  Through Mulan’s smart strategy, she unarmed Shan Yu by darting a paper fan against his hand and then pin him on the roof through his sword, thus giving a chance to Mushu to hit Shan Yu with a fast exploding gigantic firecracker.   Thus, the whole palace and the Emperor were saved.

In the midst of a vast sea of rejoicing citizens, the Emperor acknowledged Mulan’s valor and gifted her with his personal crest and the sword of Shan Yu.  The Emperor bowed to Mulan and everyone else in the throng followed the gesture.   Shang congratulated Mulan for her heroism, he wanted to say more but had reservations on telling her his personal feelings.

Mulan went home alone and apologized to her father for what she’d done.   She offered him the crest and the sword.  Her father was just glad to have her back and was so proud of the honor that she gave to the Fa family.
Mulan goes home

Inspite of the honor, Mulan was sad because of broken heart.  But soon Shang, in the guise of returning Mulan’s helmet, went after her in her family’s home.  Shang met Mulan’s father who understood that love has grown between his daughter and the Commander.

Mulan and Shang coyly talked beneath the cherry blossoms.  Mulan invited Shang to have dinner with the family.  Shang accepted.

Mulan is a perfect example of beauty with a purpose.

  1. First off I would like to say superb blog! I had a quick question in which I'd like to ask if you don't mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I've had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out. I truly do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints? Cheers!

  2. Sorry for late reply. I was searching for an old email when I saw your message. It occurred to me that your message was automatically transported to the Spam box.
Anyways, you don't have to write chronologically. Just write down the thoughts and how beautifully you want them to be conveyed to other people. Then you can organize afterwards.
You can also develop thoughts through the photographs that you have taken. Just be descriptive with your words.

    Good luck and happy writing!

  12. I have been receiving lots of comments from Anonymous. I don't know if "they" are several persons or just one and the same. I appreciate the positive feedback and the compliments. However, "you" have been spamming me with several websites. I cannot check all these websites. Also, I am cautious of going to several sites as some of them might carry viruses or might hack confidential information on my site.

Again, to Anonymous, thank you for all the good comments but please stop spamming me with websites.

I will not piublish all your comments, I would just select a few of them. I'm sure you understand. Thanks for following my blog.

    1. Anonymous, you may simply search Blogger on Google and explore its features. There a lot of templates and lay-outs there to choose from. It's very user-friendly and I bet you'll learn it by yourself just like I did when I was a neophyte blogger.

  17. I usually do not comment, but I browsed some of the comments on "Mulan's Crowning Glory".
I do have 2 questions for you if you do not mind. Could it be just me
or does it look like some of these remarks look as
if they are coming from brain dead folks? :-P And, if you are writing at additional
online sites, I would like to keep up with you. Could you post
a list of the complete urls of all your shared pages like your
linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter
    feed?

    1. Question 1:
In fairness to "these persons", no, I don't think they are brain-dead. I just do not publish all the comments, but most of these comments contain thoughts that only a human of right mind may convey. But due to their spamming, makes me think twice if they mean what they are saying or they just want me to return the favor of browsing their sites. Don't get me wrong, I have been getting a lot of good reviews from a lot of people personally known to me, so I'm confident that I'm doing well here.

      Question 2:
Thanks for the interest to keep up with me. However, I have an inactive LinkedIn account. I suggest you type my name, as appearing here, on google search bar, it will yield a lot of my other online sites. I have also done an article in Amazing Interior Design and will be coming up with another one soon. My Facebook account though is personal, which means I do not accept friend requests if I do not know/acquainted with/or at least have seen the person. In short, I do not confirm friend requests from strangers or anonymous personas. Same goes with IG.

  18. To Anonymous:

You have been bombarding my inbox with your comments. Appreciate them all as they are positive feedback. However, they go straight to the Spam Folder as you always put website urls, lots of urls. I just hope you could avoid putting all these urls, as you see, I don't get to browse all of them.

I'm sorry if I could not publish all of them as they would make a long thread of comments on this post.

As for your question, just browse the blogspot app, there are template themes and layouts which you can follow. As a blog beginner some 2 years ago, I just explored the blogspot features and selected the theme that best suit my personality. I even selected a simple lay-out.

    Good luck!

P.S. I would appreciate your positive comments even more if you comment as a specific person and not as Anonymous.
